ServGate Technologies recently introduced a security appliance targeted at small to medium-sized businesses that can run multiple applications and scale as user requirements warrant, without forcing customers to swap out the appliance itself.
The ServGate EdgeForce appliance uses a series of hardware and application modules to enable customers to add new applications as well as horsepower.
"You don't have to guess what you'll need in six to eight months," says Dario Zamarian, vice president of marketing and business development for ServGate, based in Milpitas, Calif. "The unit can scale as your network grows over time."
The base EdgeForce unit comes with ServGate's own firewall and virtual private network (VPN) software. The firewall is designed to operate at up to 75M bps and handle up to 16,000 sessions while the VPN operates at up to 20M bps and supports 250 tunnels.
Additional software functions can be enabled by purchasing a key that unlocks software that is already loaded on the device. To date, ServGate has two additional Application Modules. The Professional Module adds Web caching, URL filtering and local logging and adds a 20GB hard drive while the other offers virus scanning, based on the McAfee engine. ServGate is also in discussion with intrusion detection system vendors about adding IDS software, Zamarian says.
Similarly, users can buy additional Performance Modules to increase throughput and the number of sessions and VPN tunnels the device can handle. Performance Module 1 includes a 100M Firewall and 30M VPN while Performance Module 2 offers a 150M firewall and 40M bps VPN.
ServGate also announced the launch of a new customer support Web site, My.ServGate.com, which offers a customized interface to the ServGate customer support department. The portal also provides access to the license key activation system that enables users to register and upgrade ServGate products.
EdgeForce ranges in price from $800 for the base unit to about $2700 for a fully configured unit.
