Buffalo cooks up a pint-sized NAS unit that packs a 1TB punch.

Buffalo Technology today announced a new NAS box, proving that like the rest of the computing world, networked storage is also subject miniaturization. The company has cooked up a LinkStation Mini that packs 1 terabyte (TB) of capacity in a form factor that fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just over one pound.

Buffalo Technology LinkStation NAS 1TBStuffed with two 500 GB, 2.5-inch drives spinning at 5,400 RPM, the LinkStation Mini (model LS-WS1.0TGL/R1) measures a compact 1.57 x 3.22 x 5.31 inches. RAID 1 is supported, allowing an extra layer of data protection but yielding half the effective storage (500GB). RAID 0 is also supported.

Connections include a gigabit Ethernet and a USB port, the latter of which can be used to augment its capacity with an external hard drive. Alternately, thanks to integrated print server functionality, the LinkStation Mini can be employed to share a USB printer over a network.

Like other LinkStations, the new 1 TB model is compatible with Buffalo's Web Access service for grabbing files stored on the device over the Internet using a Web browser.

So where does this pint-sized piece of hardware fit into the storage landscape? Buffalo Technology's CEO, Takayuki Nishioka, who just took over the reins in January, says technology buyers today don't necessarily believe that "bigger is better."

"Businesses and consumers alike are seeking space saving solutions with the same level of performance and features as standard-sized NAS devices," he states.

The 1 TB LinkStation Mini goes on sale in May and is expected to carry a street price of $699. A 500 GB version is also in the works, according to the company.
