Seeking to give small business mobile professionals and telecommuters more flexibility, HP introduces the HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer and HP Officejet Pro 8000 Enterprise Printer.

Seeking to increase its mobile print options for small businesses and businesses supporting satellite offices and telecommuters, HP last week unveiled the HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer and the HP Officejet Pro 8000 Enterprise Printer.

The HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer, a color inkjet printer priced at $279.99, is intended to help mobile professionals print professional-quality documents wherever their work happens to take them.

Meanwhile, the color inkjet HP Officejet Pro 8000 Enterprise Printer, priced at $199.99, is designed to work with HP ePrint mobile printing, which lets you send print jobs to it from any email-capable device, whether you're across the room or on the other side of the globe. That's important to HP, since Forrester Research predicts that 85 percent of the global workforce will be mobile by 2015.

"The mobile workforce and trends in telecommuting have altered the business landscape and technology requirements in recent years, and customer expectations have never been higher when it comes to printing," said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president of the Imaging and Printing Group at HP (NYSE:HPQ). "The HP Officejet value proposition is resonating with customers of all sizes, and HP has one again strengthened its industry-leading portfolio with reliable, high-performing inkjet solutions to help these customers succeed."

The HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer weighs in at 5.1 pounds (5.5 pounds including the battery) making it about the same weight as a thin-and light-notebook computer.

The printer comes with a lithium ion battery that HP said can print up to 500 pages when fully charged. The company noted that the included AC power adapter is compatible with HP notebook computers as well, so mobile employees can travel with one less power cord.

For added ease of use on the road, mobile printer is equipped with built-in Bluetooth wireless technology, allowing users to print from notebooks, netbooks, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Palm OS and Nokia Symbian smartphones without a wired connection.

The printer features a 50-sheet paper tray. In draft mode, HP said it can print at up to 22 pages per minute in black and 18 pages per minute in color. Using the ISO/IEC 24734 printing standard, HP claims the speed clocks in at 5 pages per minute for black or 3.5 pages per minute for color. The device is also capable of connecting to a PictBridge compatible device to print lab-quality, borderless 4- x 6-inch photographs.

Designed for Small Business Networks

Meanwhile, HP said the network-enabled Officejet Pro 8000 Enterprise Printer is designed to make it easy for small business IT administrators to support printing for remote workers. The company noted that it is the first Officejet Pro inkjet printer with built-in support for HP's print management tools.

It features HP Universal Print Driver and HP Web Jetadmin to make it easy for small business IT administrators to integrate the device into managed printing environments, and compatibility across existing IT infrastructures and operating environments with support for SAP, Windows Cluster Server and Citrix Server.

HP said the printer produces professional color documents at up to a 50 percent lower cost-per-page and energy use than laser printers, and it features automatic two-sided printing, using up to 50 percent less paper and up to 80 percent fewer supplies and packaging by weight compared with color laser printers. It features a 250-sheet paper tray that is expandable to up to 500 sheets and comes standard with built-in Ethernet and Hi-speed USB 2.0 connectivity.

On the security end, small business IT administrators can configure features such as a password-proteted Embedded Web Server (EWS), SSL/HTTPS redirection, device firewall and a Syslog for device events.

Both the HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer and the HP Officejet Pro 8000 Enterprise Printer are available from HP and HP-authorized resellers. The HP Officejet 100 Mobile Printer is also available as a telecommuter bundle through HP Easy Print Service for U.S. customers. The HP Officejet Pro 8000 Enterprise Printer is also available through pay-per-use HP Managed Print Services contracts.
