The company says the new kids offer powerful performance, brilliant color and extensive features.

Brother's family tree grew a bit bigger today with the announcement of two color laser all-in-one printers. The new arrivals, officially dubbed MFC-9000 Series Color Laser Multi-Function Centers, provide color laser printing, copying, faxing and scanning for less than $850.

First up, the network-ready MFC-9440CN is priced at $699 and available later this month. Second, the MFC-9840CDW, which debuts in September with an $849 street price. According to a statement release by Brother, both models are built with single-pass technology and are "fast, powerful, flexible machines" designed to provide professional quality color and performance.

Both machines share an extensive feature set, with the higher-end MFC-9840CDW providing additional functionality. Here's how the shared feature set breaks down: The all-in-one is designed to print up to 21 pages per minute (ppm) in both color and black and white and to copy up to 17 ppm – also in color or black and white. Brother rates the print resolution at up to 2,400 x 600 dots per inch (dpi) and an optical color scanning resolution of up to 1,200 x 2,400 dpi.

Both devices include Ethernet, a USB 2.0 interface and a 33.6Kbps modem for faxing. The USB Direct Interface is designed to let you print and scan PDF and JPG files directly from a USB flash drive – no PC required. PictBridge support lets you print directly from PictBridge –compatible digital cameras.

Paper handling features include 300-sheet input capacity, which expands to a total of 800 sheets with the purchase of an optional 500-sheet paper tray. The base model (MFC-9440CN) comes standard with a 35-page document feeder, 16 One-Touch and 300-speed dial memory locations and 64MB of memory.

Brother set its sights for the MFC-9840CDW on SMBs and small workgroups looking for wireless networking. It's expanded features include:

  • Built-in 802.11b/g wireless interface
  • Built-in duplex for two-sided print/copy/scan/fax capabilities
  • 50-sheet auto document feeder capacity
  • Legal size platen for scanning and copying legal size documents
  • Large 5-line LCD display
  • 40 One-Touch and 300-speed dial memory locations
  • 128MB memory

Brother also offers both standard and high-yield replacement toners for the MFC-9000 Series. A standard black toner cartridge yields 2,500 pages and costs $59.99. The high-yield version runs 5,000 pages for $92.99.

The color toners (you need three) in the standard yield of 1,500 pages, cost $69.99 each. If you want the high-yield cartridges – 4,000 pages – they'll set you back $129.99 each.
