Is Salesforce Too Complex for Small Business?

Salesforce.com offers a wide range of cloud services for managing just about every aspect of your business. But is it now too complex for its SMB base? Analyst Laurie McCabe weighs in.

Every business wants to increase its customer base, drive consistent growth and watch revenues soar. And cloud services can help small businesses work toward that goal by streamlining their operations. Salesforce.com is a leader in cloud services for businesses, and its roots are planted squarely within small business. Does that mean it still serves small business effectively?

Small business analyst Laurie McCabe of the SMB Group recently attended the company's annual conference, Dreamforce, and comes back with her take on how well Salesforce is – or isn’t – doing two things: providing the tools to help small businesses grow, and clearly communicating what they can do for small business. “Why can’t business software be as easy to use as buying a book on Amazon?” At the Dreamforce 2012 SMB keynote, Hilary Koplow-McAdams, President of Salesforce.com’s Commercial Division, told the crowd that this was the question that Marc Benioff, Salesforce CEO, originally set out to answer when he founded the company. When you think about it, this question was particularly prescient in 1999, when Salesforce was in start-up mode and conversations about the “consumerization of IT” were scarce.
